I like all 3 triathlon disciplines, but I’m probably best at long distance running, that is until I broke my hip in 2019.

I most like KTC for the camaraderie, support, and togetherness…

My favourite event was the 2016 Double Deca Ironman in Switzerland (20 Ironman in 20 days); firstly, for breaking the world record and secondly for dedicating and raising funds in memory of our much missed friend Clive Reading. It was very emotional after 20 years, crossing the line in a KTC vest with a World Record in Clive’s memory. None of us will forget the day of Clive’s funeral when we formed the funeral cortege on our bikes in club kit. Events like this form and strengthen our bond as a special club.

As a coach and trainer, it’s also been a source of joy and satisfaction to share the moments of success with so many members who have experienced the elation of crossing the ‘Ironman’ line for the first time , especially those who had considered it beyond their capabilities and dreams.

My best tip is that we are all capable of so much more than we believe. We only use up a tiny percentage of our abilities. But there is no magic pill, secret training tip or fantastic bike to make it happen. It’s resilience, determination, dedication and quiet perseverance that count. I was completely unnoticed at sport as a boy and it took until my 30s and beyond to achieve my biggest successes.
